In the quiet town of Boljoon, Cebu, nestled between the mountain and the sea, history was made anew. After decades of absence, the original pulpit panels of the iconic Patrocinio de Maria Church (Boljoon Church) have finally returned home, thanks to the efforts of the National Museum of the Philippines.
This homecoming marks a significant moment not only for Boljoon but for the cultural and spiritual heritage of the entire country. The intricately carved panels, each one bearing centuries of religious artistry, were officially turned over on March 13, 2025, and are now proudly displayed inside the church where they once stood.
The pulpit panels, which depict various saints and ecclesiastical figures, are exquisite examples of Spanish colonial woodwork. Removed during previous restorations and preserved for safekeeping, their return is a gesture of reconciliation between heritage conservation and living tradition. With this event, Boljoon Church strengthens its place as one of the Philippines’ most important and complete heritage churches.

A series of events was held to commemorate the return:

Declared a National Historical Landmark and one of the oldest remaining stone churches in Cebu, Boljoon Church is a living museum of Spanish-era architecture and Filipino devotion. Its location—nestled between limestone cliffs and the Bohol Sea—adds to its almost mystical presence.
The return of the pulpit panels isn’t just about art. It’s about healing, heritage, and identity. It’s a reminder that preserving history is not just for scholars or tourists, but for communities who draw strength and faith from these sacred spaces.
Today, visitors can once again witness the panels in their rightful place—inside the ornate altar hall of Boljoon Church, surrounded by candlelight and prayer. These wooden artworks now stand as symbols of a faith that endures, and a heritage that continues to come alive.
If you plan to suroy South Cebu, don’t miss this extraordinary moment in history. The church, the community, and these timeless panels await you.
Tara, suroy ta sa Boljoon.
