Happy Hippos, Banilad: The Cebu Brunch That Takes Healthy Literally
Happy Hippos in Banilad makes almost everything it serves from scratch. Photographed menu prices, what to order, hours, and how to find it inside Streetscape.
Healthy food in Cebu usually costs more than it feeds you. That is why I walked past Happy Hippos for the better part of a year, and it is why I finally went in on a weekday morning and ordered a bowl of yogurt and granola for ₱380 like a man making peace with something.
The verdict first, and the yogurt is not the reason. Everything on that plate was made in the building. The granola, the peanut butter, the coconut caramel, the whole wheat sourdough, the pita pockets, the hollandaise. In a city where homemade usually means somebody opened the bag, that is a real distinction, and you can taste where the money went.

What Happy Hippos actually is
Happy Hippos calls itself a casual restaurant serving international cuisine built on whole, unprocessed food prepared fresh from scratch. Restaurants describe themselves generously all the time. This one is telling the truth, and the menu is where you catch it: garlic brown rice instead of white, whole wheat sourdough instead of white bread, calamansi vinaigrette instead of a bottle of ranch.
The room is bright and low and green. Café chairs, pale wood, pendant lights, an open kitchen, and two cartoon hippos drawn on nearly every flat surface in the place. The espresso machine is olive. Stacks of yellow, pink and white cups sit on top of it. There is a basket of bananas beside the till because the smoothies need them.
The shop opens at seven. Streetscape itself does not open until eight. For that first hour Happy Hippos is the only lit door on the paseo, which is worth knowing if you have an early flight out of Mactan-Cebu International Airport or you simply want a table to yourself.
The menu, and what it costs
Everything below was photographed off the printed menu in August 2026. The menu runs across four cards. One does breakfast, bakery, soups, salads and snacks. One does coffee, smoothies and everything else. A third, headed Substantial Stuff and Sinless, carries the larger plates and the desserts. This guide covers brunch, which is what most people come for.

Rise and Shine: the breakfast plates
| Plate | What comes with it | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Yogi bowl | Greek yogurt, homemade granola, toasted coconut flakes, pure honey, mango, banana | ₱380 |
| The big hippo | Two eggs your way, chicken sausages, american bacon, seared tomatoes, homemade baked hash, garlic brown rice or whole wheat sourdough | ₱520 |
| French toast | Maple syrup, whipped cream, baked whole wheat cubes, fresh berries | ₱420 |
| Whole wheat pancakes | Homemade coconut caramel sauce, whipped cream, blueberry, banana | ₱390 |
| Our bennies, bacon | Poached eggs, hollandaise, homemade whole wheat muffins, side salad | ₱450 |
| Our bennies, spinach and feta | Same plate, meat free | ₱390 |
| Our bowls, chicken sausage | Two eggs your way, jamba brown rice or garlic brown rice | ₱380 |
| Our bowls, bacon | Same bowl | ₱420 |
| Our bowls, salmon belly | Same bowl | ₱490 |
The big hippo at ₱520 is the only plate here that will genuinely defeat a hungry person, and the hash under it is theirs rather than a frozen patty.
Croissants and toast
| Plate | What comes with it | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Scramble croissant | Scrambled eggs, butter croissant, side salad | ₱330 |
| Veggie croissant | Grilled eggplant and zucchini, fresh chickpeas, jalapeño, feta, sundried tomato pesto | ₱360 |
| Breakfast croissant | Chicken smash patty, sunny side up egg, dijon mustard, yogurt aioli | ₱390 |
| Cheeky toast | Sous vide chicken breast, emmental, lettuce, sundried tomato pesto, whole wheat sourdough | ₱390 |
| Avo toast | Poached eggs, smashed avo, two slices of whole wheat sourdough | ₱450 |
Soups, salads and snacks
| Plate | What comes with it | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin soup | Croutons, basil oil | ₱160 |
| Tomato soup | Croutons, basil oil | ₱160 |
| Our hummus | Chickpeas, tahini, tzatziki, homemade whole wheat pita pockets | ₱250 |
| Falafel | Baked, tzatziki, homemade whole wheat pita pockets | ₱350 |
| Greek salad | Mixed lettuce, cucumber, feta, calamansi vinaigrette | ₱360 |
| Quinoa salad | Tri-color quinoa, mixed lettuce, cashews, calamansi vinaigrette | ₱370 |
| Lola bolas | Chimichurri, warm tri-color quinoa | ₱480 |
Two things worth noticing on this card. The pita pockets under the hummus and the falafel are made in house, which is not normal at ₱250. And the salads are dressed in calamansi vinaigrette rather than something imported in a bottle, which is the most Cebuano decision on the menu and also the correct one.
Smoothies
There are eight, every one built on almond milk and greek yogurt, priced ₱290 to ₱450. The counter keeps a printed guide listing exactly what goes into each drink, ingredient by ingredient. I have not seen another café in Cebu put that on a card.
| Smoothie | What is in it | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Green glow | Toasted almonds, homemade peanut butter, pineapple, spinach | ₱290 |
| Cookie dough | Toasted almonds, raisins, oats, cinnamon, cocoa powder, homemade peanut butter, vanilla, banana | ₱300 |
| Blueberry pie | Chia seeds, raisins, oats, cinnamon, blueberries, banana | ₱350 |
| Hippo harvest | Toasted almonds, spirulina, fuji apple, pineapple, blueberries, banana | ₱360 |
| Chili chocolate | Almonds, oats, cinnamon, cocoa powder, cayenne, coffee beans, dates, banana | ₱380 |
| Strawberry swing | Chia seeds, raisins, oats, strawberries, banana | ₱380 |
| Avo good day | Chia seeds, honey, oats, avocado, banana, vanilla extract | ₱380 |
| Berry boost | Chia seeds, oats, blueberries, banana, bayberry powder, raspberry powder, beetroot, collagen and probiotics | ₱450 |

Avo good day and berry boost are written on stickers rather than printed into the card, which means they are the new ones. Berry boost at ₱450 is the most expensive drink in the shop and the only one carrying collagen and probiotics, so you can decide for yourself whether that is worth ₱70 over a strawberry swing.
Coffee and everything else
| Drink | Price |
|---|---|
| Long black | ₱150 |
| Affogato | ₱180 |
| Latte | ₱180 |
| Caramel macchiato | ₱190 |
| Mocha | ₱190 |
| Our cocoa | ₱190 |
| Hot tea | ₱105 |
| Sparkling water | ₱85 |
| Hope in a bottle | ₱50 |
Substituting the milk in a coffee adds ₱60, which is steep, though the almond milk in every smoothie is already included in the price. The ₱50 bottled water is Hope in a Bottle, the Philippine social enterprise whose profits go into building public school classrooms. Nobody at the counter makes a speech about it. It just sits on the list at fifty pesos, doing its job.
What to order

Start with the yogi bowl at ₱380 if you want to understand the kitchen in one order. Granola underneath, greek yogurt in a dome on top, mango and banana around the edge, toasted almond flakes and coconut over everything, honey doing all the sweetening. The granola is properly toasted and barely sweet. It tastes like it was put together by somebody who eats it.

The whole wheat pancakes at ₱390 are the other one. Three of them, blueberries and banana around the base, a rosette of cream on top, and homemade coconut caramel poured over the stack. Whole wheat pancakes are usually a compromise you can taste. These are not.
Order like this:
- Hungry, and it is your first time: the big hippo, ₱520.
- Not that hungry: the yogi bowl, ₱380.
- You want the kitchen to show off: our bennies, ₱450, because the muffins under the poached eggs are theirs.
- Cheapest good meal in the room: hummus at ₱250 and a green glow at ₱290. Five hundred and forty pesos, and you will not be hungry.
- Two people, one bill: pancakes and a bennie, split, with one coffee each.
Ordering, paying, and the watering hole

You order at the counter and you pay when you order. The sign says so in hippo handwriting and the staff will hold you to it politely. There is a Maya reader on the counter beside the tablet till, so cards are fine, and the letter board overhead carries the same lineup as the printed card, which is a small thing that tells you somebody is minding the details.

WATERING HOLE is painted on the back wall with an arrow pointing straight down at a self serve water station. Free, help yourself, no asking anyone. On the floating shelves above it they sell hippo plush toys and pink caps.
I have a professional weakness for a shop that sells you the place you are standing in, since that is the entire business we are in. If you would rather wear the city than the hippo, that is what the Cebu Coordinates tee is for.
They keep a jar of dog treats on the counter

There is a steel water bowl on the pavement outside the door and a glass jar labelled Pet Treats sitting on the counter beside the card reader. Nobody advertises either one. They just sit there, which is usually how you tell the difference between a policy and a marketing position.
Streetscape runs open along the paseo, so a dog waiting outside the glass stays in the shade and in sight of your table.
Is Happy Hippos worth it
Yes, with conditions, and the conditions are about you rather than about the restaurant.
- Go if you want a full plate of real food before eight in the morning and you are done with hotel buffets.
- Go if somebody in your group eats vegetarian. The veggie croissant, the hummus, the falafel, both salads, the spinach and feta bennies and all eight smoothies are built for them without anybody needing a separate menu.
- Go if you have a dog and nowhere in Cebu to take it.
- Think twice if you are feeding a family cheaply. Two adults and two children will clear ₱1,600 without trying.
- Skip it if what you actually want is silog. This is not that and has never pretended to be, and there are better places two turns away for it.
Budget ₱450 to ₱600 a head for a plate and a drink. Two people ordering properly land near ₱1,100.
How to get there, and everything practical

| Hours | 7am to 9pm, daily. Read off their own door sign in August 2026. |
| Phone | (0917) 102 7235 or (0917) 638 8881 |
| Paying | Pay as you order at the counter. Cash and cards, Maya reader on the till. |
| Water | Free and self serve, back wall, under the arrow. |
| Dogs | Water bowl outside the door, treats jar on the counter. |
Streetscape sits on Paseo Saturnino, one turn off Maria Luisa Road in Banilad. The landmark to give a driver is Maria Luisa, not the mall name. From Mactan-Cebu International Airport allow what you would allow for Cebu City proper, thirty five to forty five minutes and around ₱500 on Grab, which the airport guide breaks down properly.
Within a few minutes of the same road: Commonly Uncommon for coffee at Crossroads, Your Daily Go for a cheaper sit-down, and Luzern Steakhouse when brunch is not the meal you are after. Everything else in the city is pinned on the Cebu map.

Inside Streetscape on Paseo Saturnino, off Maria Luisa Road in Banilad, Cebu City. It is a small open complex rather than a mall you can get lost in, and Happy Hippos faces the paseo.

Every year another brand decides Cebu is worth the flight. The city was worth it long before any of them noticed.
