For everyone who cannot make it to the cemetery this Undas: put a name on a candle, save the card, and send it to the family at the tomb.

In Cebu, the first two days of November are Kalag-Kalag, from kalag, the Cebuano word for soul. All Saints’ Day falls on November 1 and All Souls’ Day on November 2, and for most families both days end up at the same tomb. The grave gets scrubbed and repainted the week before. Somebody brings the folding chairs, somebody brings the rice, and the candles go down on the concrete one after another until the tomb is ringed with them.

Not everyone gets to be there. The cousin working in Dubai, the tito in Calgary, the barkada member whose lola is buried on another island, the one who drew the shift that cannot be swapped. This page is for them. Type a name, pick the words, and the card is yours to save and post.

What families do on Kalag-Kalag

The week before. The tomb gets cleaned, weeded and often repainted, usually white. Families who live far away pay somebody to do it, so the cemetery is busy with brushes and paint cans days before November 1.

The candles. Every visitor lights one, and the wind keeps putting them out. The fix every family discovers on its own is a wall of cardboard, a cut plastic bottle or a sheet of zinc around the flames. By evening the tomb is crusted with wax.

The food. Nobody visits empty handed. Rice, puso, pancit, whatever the family always brings, eaten on the tomb or on mats beside it. At home, many Visayan families set out an atang, a plate of food left for the dead, often the dishes the person liked.

The long stay. Some families come for an hour. Others stay all day, play cards, and wait out the night shift of relatives arriving after work. Either way, the roads around the big city cemeteries back up for both days.

If you cannot go home this Undas

Light a candle wherever you are. Ask your parish office for a Mass intention for the person, which most parishes take for a small offering. Call the family while they are at the tomb, at a time when somebody will have signal, and let them prop the phone against the headstone for a minute. Then send the card above to the family group chat, so whoever is there can show it to everyone sitting around the candles.

For the lighter side of the day, play Undas Bingo with whoever is at the tomb. More games are on the Arcade page.
