Which Cebu Island Should You Escape to This Weekend?

Bantayan, Malapascua, Camotes or Moalboal. Ten questions about your alarm, your budget and your idea of rest, and an honest answer about which island to book.

Share your love

Every Cebuano has had this conversation on a Thursday night. The group chat wants a beach. Somebody says Bantayan, somebody says it is too far, somebody says Moalboal, and somebody who has never been diving says they would love to see the thresher sharks, and the weekend arrives before anyone decides.

Here is a shortcut. The four big island weekends from Cebu City are not four versions of the same trip. They suit different alarms, different budgets and very different ideas of rest. Ten questions, about a minute, and an honest answer about which one you should book.

If you got Bantayan

Leave Cebu North by one in the afternoon or you will miss the last ferry and spend the night in San Remigio. Island Shipping charges ₱370 and Super Shuttle ₱392 for the Hagnaya crossing, after a fare rollback in May 2026, plus a ₱30 environmental fee when you land at Santa Fe. Check the tide table before anything else, because the sandbar only shows at low water. The church in Bantayan town has been closed since the September 2025 earthquake, with Mass held outdoors. Everything else is in the Bantayan guide, and the four-day cost breakdown is in what Bantayan actually costs.

If you got Malapascua

The sharks moved. They used to come up at Monad Shoal and since around 2022 they have turned up at Kimud Shoal instead, about an hour out, at a shallower 12 to 20 meters, which is why a newly certified Open Water diver can now do it. Boats leave Bounty Beach between 4:30 and 5:30 AM. Be at Maya port by 3 PM on the way in, because the last public boats go between about 4:30 and 5:30 PM. More in the Malapascua guide.

If you got Camotes

Jomalia sails from Danao at 5:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM, and the crossing takes two to two and a half hours, so budget three hours pier to pier. Pacijan and Poro are joined by a causeway about a kilometer and a half long, which means one scooter covers both. Time the caves for high tide, which is the opposite of most cave advice. The full picture is in the Camotes guide and the Danao crossing guide.

If you got Moalboal

Take the Bato via Barili bus from Cebu South Bus Terminal, which runs about every half hour, rather than waiting for a direct one. Swimming at Panagsama costs a ₱100 environmental fee. The sardines sit one to ten meters down, so a snorkel is enough, and before seven the water is flatter and the strip is asleep. For actual sand, go to Basdaku. More in the Moalboal guide.

Whichever island you pick, all four sit on the same map. The Cebu Coordinates tee has the whole island and its outlying isles on the back.

Frequently asked questions

Which Cebu island is closest to Cebu City for a weekend?

Camotes and Moalboal are the quickest. The Mactan fastcraft reaches Camotes in about 90 minutes, and the bus to Moalboal takes three to four hours. Bantayan and Malapascua each take most of a day.

Can you visit Bantayan as a day trip?

Not comfortably. The bus and ferry take most of a morning each way, and the last ferry rule means leaving Cebu North by about 1 PM. Plan at least one night.

Do you need to be a diver for Malapascua?

For the thresher sharks, yes, with at least an Open Water certification. The island itself is fine for non-divers, with beaches, a lighthouse and snorkeling.

When is the best time to see the Moalboal sardines?

They are there most days all year. November to May usually brings calmer, clearer water, which is why it is called the better season.
