Malapascua Island: Cebu’s Thresher Shark Capital

Thresher sharks on a near-daily schedule, white sand the rest of the day. The long trip north pays for itself.

Malapascua Island is 2.5 kilometers of sand at the top of Cebu with a world-class secret underneath: it is one of the only places on the planet where thresher sharks show up almost every day. Divers cross oceans for Monad Shoal; everyone else comes for the white beaches and stays longer than planned.

The verdict: worth the full travel day it takes to get there. Come between November and May when the seas are calm, and even if you have never dived, this is the island that will talk you into it.

The thresher sharks of Monad Shoal

Thresher sharks, with tails as long as their bodies, are rare sightings almost everywhere. At Monad Shoal off Malapascua they appear on a near-daily schedule, which has made this small island a fixture on serious divers’ maps. It is the anchor experience: an early morning descent, and then a shape out of the blue that you will describe badly to everyone for years.

The other dive sites

  • Gato Island: a marine reserve and sea snake sanctuary threaded with caves and tunnels.
  • Kimud Shoal: hammerheads and big schooling fish.
  • Bugtong Bato: a shipwreck wrapped in coral gardens.
  • Chocolate Island: macro life for the underwater photographers.

Above the waterline

The island itself is an easy wander: palm-fringed beaches, turquoise shallows, and a size, 2.5 by 1 kilometers, that means nothing is far from anything. Beachfront resorts run from backpacker simple to genuinely comfortable, and the pace everywhere is boat-schedule slow.

How to get to Malapascua from Cebu City

From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, head to the North Bus Terminal in Cebu City. A bus or van to Maya Port in Daanbantayan takes 4 to 5 hours; from Maya, the boat to Malapascua takes about 30 minutes. Boats run regularly and private transfers are available. It is a long day; treat the journey as part of the trip.

When to go

November to May, the dry months with calm seas, is the window that makes both the crossing and the diving easy. If Cebu’s water is your theme, pair Malapascua’s sharks with the sardines of Moalboal or the slower island pace of Camotes.
