Balikbayan Bingo: 25 Things That Happen in Your First Week Home
The whole family at arrivals, a tita who says you got fat, chocolates handed out by rank. Mark your homecoming, plus the eTravel and balikbayan box rules.
You know the scene before the plane even lands. The whole family at arrivals, holding a sign nobody needed. Lola crying before you reach her. A tita looking you up and down and announcing, in front of everyone, that you got fat, and another tita disagreeing loudly because she thinks you got thin.
Then the box comes out, and the chocolates are handed out in an order everyone understands and nobody explains. Mark what happens in your first week home. The middle square is free, because that one is the whole point.

Before you fly home: the paperwork that matters
Two things trip up returning Filipinos every year, and both are easy once you know them.
eTravel is required and free. Arriving passengers, Filipinos included, register on the official eTravel site, etravel.gov.ph, within 72 hours before arrival, and save the QR code it gives you. The official site does not charge anything, so any site asking for a fee is not the real one. Our eTravel guide walks through it.
Balikbayan boxes have a duty-free limit. Under the Bureau of Customs rule in CAO 01-2018, overseas Filipinos can send balikbayan boxes duty and tax free up to ₱150,000 in value, up to three times a calendar year, as long as the contents are personal or household goods and not commercial quantities.
| What | The rule | Source |

If the box is for Christmas
There is no single Christmas deadline for a balikbayan box. It depends on the country it leaves from, the forwarder and the barangay it is going to, and island addresses close much earlier than Metro Manila. One Australian forwarder’s 2026 schedule put its cutoff for hard-to-reach islands, including Camotes and Bantayan, nearly eight weeks ahead of Metro Manila. Ask your forwarder about your exact address before paying. The full rundown is in the balikbayan box Christmas deadline guide.

Landing in Cebu
International flights into Cebu arrive at Mactan-Cebu Terminal 2, the building with the timber arches. The yellow airport taxis are metered, and their flag-down rose to ₱115 on 28 September 2026. If the family is meeting you, agree on a pickup point in advance, because arrivals gets crowded. Everything else about the airport is in the Mactan-Cebu airport guide.

The first week, honestly
Every balikbayan knows the rhythm. The first two days are a blur of visitors and food. By the third day you have been asked how much you earn and when you are getting married. By the end of the week you have switched back to Bisaya without noticing, eaten rice at every meal, and started dreading the departure gate. Leave a little room in the suitcase going back, because the pasalubong flows the other way too.
You carried the islands with you when you left. The Archipelago tee says it on the back: wear the islands that raised you.
