Unity Coffee and Vinyl, Cebu: The Full Menu, and the Records Upstairs

Unity Coffee · Vinyl is a breakfast cafe on Don Jose Avila Street with a record shop on its mezzanine and two turntables set into the dining room. The food is why the tables fill. The records are why the place has a name. And the best order on the board sits near the bottom of the price list: budbud, sikwate and mango for ₱190.
The room is built in two layers. Downstairs is a double-height dining room with tall windows, terrazzo floors and a big round UNITY sign hanging from the ceiling. Upstairs, behind a glass rail, the records stand face-out on shelves under a green VINYL neon. You eat on the ground floor and look up at the stock.

Coffee is not on the table menu, and the drinks list was not photographed, so coffee prices are not given here. The one drinks price on record is the Pandan Series board by the door: five pandan coffees and coolers, ₱230 to ₱250 where the board is legible.

What to order at Unity
BudSikMan, ₱190. Budbud, sikwate and ripe mango, the Cebuano merienda, served at a cafe table. The name is the order, shortened. If you only want the chocolate, the Malagos sikwate on its own is ₱155, and the champorado is ₱165.
A breakfast plate. Both plates we photographed came the same way: a main, two sunny side eggs, plain or garlic rice, a few slices of cucumber, a leaf of lettuce and a cup of ketchup. They run from ₱275 for Spanish sardines to ₱490 for the premium beef tapa, served all day.
The Big Breakfast, ₱595, if there are two of you. Three mains, two eggs and two servings of rice. Two ordinary plates cost about the same, so the third main is close to free. What you give up is two eggs.
For a group that wants to stay into the evening, the Rib King full slab is ₱1,650 and the half is ₱825. Champion Chops are ₱730 with rice or mashed potatoes.
The records, the booth and the room
The DJ booth sits at the back of the dining room: two turntables on Unity slipmats, a club mixer between them, monitors on stands, and a wall behind that holds record sleeves on one side and bottles on the other. It was quiet when Suroy.ph was there. For nights when a selector is on, check the cafe’s own Facebook page rather than the door.
Records are not only upstairs. Lit bins run along the front windows on the ground floor, an Elton John sleeve at the front of one when we photographed it. No prices were posted on the bins we saw, so ask at the counter before you get attached to a sleeve.

The annoying parts
This is not a ₱150 silog. Plates start at ₱275 before a drink, the tapa is ₱490, and the coffee is extra on top. The room is the premium you are paying.

The long tables belong to the schools. On the Thursday we visited, students in white uniforms filled most of the long tables. If you want a quiet corner for a laptop, take a two-seater by the windows.
