Why Flying into Dumaguete Beats Landing in Cebu for South Cebu
If south Cebu is the trip, Cebu is the wrong airport. Land at Mactan and Oslob is three to four hours away down a road that does not forgive a bad morning. Land at Dumaguete and the same beach is a 20 minute drive to Sibulan plus a 25 minute crossing to Santander. The strait is narrower than the traffic.
This is not a hack so much as a look at the map. Negros Oriental sits closer to Cebu’s southern tip than Cebu City does, and the Tañon Strait has a ferry every ninety minutes from before dawn.
The two ways in, side by side
Via Mactan. International and domestic arrivals, every airline, dozens of daily flights. Then Cebu City to Oslob is 116 kilometers of the Cebu South Road. Route planners will tell you two hours. Guides written by people who have driven it say three to four, and the guides are right. Add the run out of the airport and across the city and a morning is gone.
Via Dumaguete. Sibulan airport sits just north of Dumaguete city. From arrivals it is a short hop to Sibulan port, then Maayo Shipping crosses to Liloan Port in Santander in about 25 minutes for ₱130. Santander is the southern tip of Cebu. Oslob is up the coast from there, not down the length of the island.
The whole transfer, gate to Santander, runs comfortably inside two hours including the wait for a boat.
Getting to Dumaguete
From Cebu, Cebgo flies it in about 55 minutes on an ATR 72, somewhere between seven and fourteen times a week depending on which schedule you read. Cebu Pacific’s mainline service ended on 7 June 2026 and the flying moved to Cebgo, so old 5J flight numbers no longer exist.
From Manila the route is served directly, which is the version of this that actually saves a whole connection: fly Manila to Dumaguete, cross the strait, and be in south Cebu the same afternoon without ever touching Mactan.

The crossing
Maayo Shipping runs Sibulan to Liloan Port, Santander. Eleven daily departures from Liloan starting 04:30 and running to 19:30, nine the other way. About 25 minutes. Passenger ₱130.
Vehicles cross too, which is what makes this route useful for anyone renting a car in Negros: motorbike ₱380, big bike or ATV ₱546, and sedan, SUV, van or pickup ₱1,320. All checked September 2026.
Maayo also runs Larena on Siquijor to Liloan, so the same port stitches south Cebu to Siquijor without going through Dumaguete at all. That link is covered in the Oslob to Siquijor route guide.
Who this is actually for
It works if your trip is Oslob, Sumilon, Tumalog, Samboan, Moalboal or the south coast generally, and if you are coming from Manila or already in Negros. It works especially well as an exit: finish in the south, cross to Dumaguete, fly out, and skip the drive back to Cebu City entirely.
It does not work if you want Cebu City, Mactan, the northern islands, or anything on the bus network out of the North Terminal. Bantayan and Malapascua are firmly Mactan trips.
It is a wash if you are doing whale sharks as a day trip and nothing else. The Oslob briefing starts early enough that where you slept matters more than where you landed.
The honest caveats
- Fewer flights, less recovery. Mactan has alternatives when a flight cancels. Dumaguete has fewer, and the last strait crossing is 19:30 from Liloan. A delayed evening arrival can mean a night in Dumaguete you did not plan.
- Two tickets, two risks. A Manila to Dumaguete flight and a Cebu departure are separate bookings with no protection between them. Leave a day.
- The drive times above are estimates, not promises. Route planners put Cebu City to Santander at 2 hours 15 and it does not behave that way in practice. Assume longer in both directions.
- Cash for the crossing. Small port, small windows.

Dumaguete, by a wide margin. Sibulan to Liloan Port in Santander is a 25 minute crossing and Oslob is up the coast from there. Cebu City to Oslob is 116 km of the Cebu South Road and takes three to four hours in practice.
Maayo Shipping charges ₱130 per passenger for the Sibulan to Liloan Port crossing, about 25 minutes. Motorbikes are ₱380 and a sedan, SUV, van or pickup is ₱1,320. Checked September 2026.
Maayo Shipping’s last published departure from Liloan Port is 19:30, with eleven daily crossings from 04:30. A late evening arrival into Dumaguete can miss the last boat, so allow for a night on the Negros side.
Cebgo, on an ATR 72, in about 55 minutes. Cebu Pacific’s mainline 5J service on the route ended on 7 June 2026.
