Bohol Travel Guide 2026: The Loop, the East Side and What the Hills Cost Now
Most Bohol trips are one loop through the middle of the island and two nights on Panglao. Here is what that misses, and which Chocolate Hills viewpoints are now closed.
Bohol takes three nights: one day for the countryside loop, one for Panglao and the water, one for the east side the tour vans skip. Fly into Panglao or take the two hour fast craft from Cebu, sleep on Panglao, hire a van with a driver for the loop, and check two prices before you go: the Loboc river cruise, which went to ₱1,200 in April 2026, and the Chocolate Hills gate, which is not settled.

Where most people sleep
The airport is on Panglao, and so are the beaches, the dive shops and most of the resorts. Tagbilaran, across the bridges, has the port, cheaper rooms and the shorter drive east.
One day, one van
Tarsiers in Corella at opening, the man-made forest in Bilar, lunch on the Loboc river (₱1,200 a head since 16 April 2026), Baclayon church on the way back. Almost everyone books it with a driver.
Carmen, the complex
The Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen is the viewing deck people mean, and it is open. A planned fee increase was deferred in September 2025; confirm the gate price on the day. Captain’s Peak has been closed since March 2024; check Sagbayan Peak and Bud Agta before you plan around them.
Candijay, two hours out
Can-Umantad Falls with the Cadapdapan rice terraces on the slope above it. The day tours skip this side of the island, which is the reason to go.
OceanJet and the sandbar
Fast craft from Cebu take about two hours to Tagbilaran; OceanJet charged ₱880 tourist class from 10 July 2026 plus a fuel surcharge. Virgin Island sandbar reopened in 2026 with a cap of 250 visitors every two hours.

Getting to Bohol
By air. Bohol-Panglao International Airport opened in November 2018 and has been run by Aboitiz InfraCapital since 2025. In September 2026 it listed 44 flights a week from Manila, 15 from Davao, and smaller numbers from El Nido, Iloilo and Clark, plus 14 a week from Incheon and 7 from Busan. The first charter from Tokyo landed in May 2026.
By sea. OceanJet runs about 13 fast craft trips a day each way between Cebu and Tagbilaran, roughly two hours. After a fuel surcharge in April 2026, fares came down from 10 July 2026 to ₱880 tourist class and ₱1,320 business, with a smaller surcharge still added. Where to stay: Panglao or Tagbilaran
Panglao is the beach, the diving, the restaurants and the resorts, and it is where the airport is. Tagbilaran is the city, the port and the cheaper rooms, and it puts you closer to the road east. Most people are happier on Panglao. The full comparison is in Panglao vs Tagbilaran.

The countryside loop, in the order that works
Leave by seven. The loop is not long, but every stop has a queue by mid-morning and the light on the hills is better before the haze. A van with a driver is how almost everyone does it.
Tarsiers first
The tarsier conservation area in Corella is the one stop where the size of the crowd affects the animals as well as you. Tarsiers are nocturnal, about the size of a fist, and asleep when you visit. Go at opening, keep your voice down and your flash off.
The man-made forest
A stretch of planted mahogany on the road through Bilar, dense enough that the air cools when you drive in. Everyone stops for a photograph. The forest guide explains how it got there.
Loboc
The Loboc river cruise is a floating lunch buffet with live music. It costs ₱1,200 a head from 16 April 2026, for residents and tourists alike, and it is called off in bad weather, as it was when Tropical Storm Basyang came through on 6 February 2026. The church beside the river takes ten minutes.
Baclayon
Baclayon Church is one of the oldest stone churches in the country. The 2013 earthquake damaged it badly; what stands now is a restoration, and the museum beside it keeps pieces that did not go back up.
The Chocolate Hills: the fee, and the viewpoints
The Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen is the government viewing deck, and it is open. Carmen planned to raise the entrance fee on 1 October 2025 to ₱150 for adult non-Boholanos under Municipal Ordinance No. 27, series of 2023. On 27 September 2025 the mayor deferred it pending a review, and Suroy.ph found no record of it taking effect since. The adult fee before the planned increase was ₱100. Treat the gate price as unconfirmed until you are standing at it, and bring cash.
Captain’s Peak, a private viewpoint, has been closed since March 2024. Sagbayan Peak and the structure at Bud Agta were both investigated in 2024 over structures built in the protected area; their current status could not be confirmed, so check before planning around either. The east side, which the loop skips
Candijay is about two hours from Tagbilaran. Can-Umantad Falls is reached by habal-habal and then a short walk, and the Cadapdapan rice terraces sit on the slope above it. They are one stop, and the day tours do not go there. With three days, trading the second half of the loop for a morning in Candijay is the swap worth making.
Panglao, and where to eat
Bohol Bee Farm in Dauis is the long running one, with a garden to plate kitchen and the ice cream people come back for. Mist Panglao is the sit-down dinner. Moadto is the strip where groups end up when nobody can decide.
Island hopping off Panglao now has rules: the Virgin Island sandbar reopened in February 2026 with a cap of 250 visitors every two hours between 6 AM and 6 PM, boat inspections, and pack-in, pack-out trash rules. Panglao also collects an environmental fee; the per-person amount was not published in the coverage found.
A three-day Bohol itinerary
Day one. Land at Panglao or come off the boat at Tagbilaran, check in, and plan nothing else. Dinner at the Bee Farm on the way in.
Day two. Out by seven. Tarsiers at opening, the forest, Loboc for lunch, Carmen in the afternoon after the vans thin out, Baclayon on the way home if there is light.
Day three. Candijay: Can-Umantad and Cadapdapan, lunch in town, back by late afternoon.
Two nights means dropping the east side. Five nights adds Anda on the east coast and a full day in the water off Panglao.
Getting around the island
A van with a driver for the loop day, habal-habal for short hops and waterfall jump-off points, and motorbike rental on Panglao if you are comfortable on the road. Ride hailing works in Tagbilaran and Panglao and thins out past them. Carry cash; cards are rare outside the Panglao resorts.
When to go, and the truth about the brown hills
Bohol has no pronounced dry season; it is usually classed as PAGASA climate Type IV, with rain spread through the year. The hills brown when the rain stops long enough, which follows the weather rather than the calendar. PAGASA’s October 2026 outlook calls for way below normal rainfall across most of the country from February to April 2027 with a strong El Niño, which makes brown hills in early 2027 more likely than usual and falls a little thinner. Entrance fees are small one by one and add up across a loop. The current fees for Bohol alongside its neighbors are in tourism fees for Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Dumaguete.
