World Turtle Day: A Call to Protect Our Ocean’s Ancient Navigators

Share your love

Every May 23, the world unites to honor one of the oldest, most awe-inspiring creatures to ever swim our seas — the sea turtle. These gentle mariners have journeyed across oceans for over 100 million years, long before humans walked the earth. But today, they face threats that no shell can protect them from.

This World Turtle Day, we don’t just celebrate them, we fight for their future.

The Life of a Sea Turtle: Resilient, Mysterious, and Endangered

Sea turtles are travelers by nature. From hatchlings scrambling across the sand to full-grown adults crossing continents, they embody freedom, endurance, and instinct.

Here are a few beautiful truths about them:

  • Female sea turtles return to the exact beach where they were born to lay their eggs — a phenomenon called natal homing.
  • Some species migrate over 16,000 kilometers annually.
  • They feed on jellyfish, seagrass, and sponges — playing a crucial role in marine ecosystems by keeping coral reefs healthy and seagrass beds trimmed.
  • Sadly, only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood.

Despite their strength, they are under constant threat from plastic pollution and habitat destruction to illegal poaching and climate change.

Among the coral cities of the sea, this turtle finds shelter and food. But as reefs face bleaching and plastic pollution, so does the delicate life they sustain.

The Philippines: A Sea Turtle Stronghold

With five out of seven sea turtle species found in our waters, the Philippines is one of their most important nesting and feeding grounds. Protected areas like Turtle Islands in Tawi-TawiApo Island in Negros, and parts of Davao Oriental are home to green and hawksbill turtles.

But it’s not just sanctuaries that matter, it’s the everyday decisions of ordinary people.

Places like Oslob and Moalboal bring a mix of wonder and ethical debate, as tourism intersects with marine protection. The conversation continues but what remains urgent is this: they need us now more than ever.

Silent and graceful, a green sea turtle makes its slow journey through the Philippine waters. Their long migrations span thousands of kilometers — a true testament to nature’s resilience.

A Story from Davao: Kindness That Echoes Across the Sea

Just today, we received a touching message from one of our customers in Davao City that reminded us why we started the Tidal Hope Collection in the first place.

Back in the year 2000, he released 55 baby turtles into the sea, a quiet act of hope and care for the ocean. Over the years, he spotted turtles returning to her beachfront, as if drawn back by an invisible thread which is a gentle reminder that the ocean never forgets.

What began as a simple shirt order became something so much more: a full-circle moment. A story of conservation, memory, and magic that echoes through time, waves, and now through the Turtle Club Tee he chose to wear.

It’s these personal stories that remind us: conservation is not just a campaign. It’s a legacy, and every voice matters.

A Better Future Begins on the Shore

This World Turtle Day, may we realize that every plastic we refuse, every beach we leave untouched, and every voice we raise — ripples far beyond us. The sea turtle, ancient and enduring, has carried stories across oceans for over a hundred million years. It’s time we write ours as protectors, not just spectators.

Because long after our footprints fade from the sand, the waves will still return.

Let them carry stories of kindness, not regret.

Of hope, not harm.

So wherever you are — on the coastlines of Davao, the reefs of Apo Island, or in the heart of the city — remember this:

Even the smallest act of care can echo across oceans.
